This is Porto cathedral the start of our Camino. We set off at about 12 midday and have just arrived at our first Albergue at 7pm. A long first day.
At the cathedral we got our Camino passports stamped and walked from the cathedral (after a short prayer for guidance and support) and straight to the metro station. We took the train to the town of Maia which is where we took our first steps on the Camino de Compostela towards Santiago.
We met a wonderful guide at the Maia tourist information centre who had walked the Camino and was full of enthusiasm. He showed us the markers to look out for and to follow them to our first stop at the Albergue Monasterio Varo. It was about 15km with moderate hills. When we arrived and where shown our modest twin room we knew we were pilgrims at last.
